Condo Association Bans EVs From Parking in Garage, Saying They Pose Fire Risk

A Colorado resident says their condo association banned charging or parking electric vehicles in their own parking garage.

There are no guidelines for properties like Decatur yet, according to an email from the condo association obtained by CleanTechnica. The Board of Managers has decided to prohibit any and all electric vehicles from using the Decatur garage, either parked or charging.

The email doesn't say where owners are allowed to park their cars, but we're pretty sure there's street parking nearby. It also leaves the question of where EV drivers can charge their car to make it usable. There are no charging stations in the town, and the top three results are in Silverthorne. There is at least one hotel in Keystone that charges, but it is not clear if it is only for guests.

This is a big deal for infrastructure. Imagine being forced to drive to another town every time you wanted to fill up your car with gas. What about drivers with disabilities? Street parking is not accessible.

It is not clear if electric cars pose a higher fire hazard than fossil fuel cars.

CNN reported a few years ago that in 2015, 174,000 vehicle fires were reported and nearly every one of them were gasoline cars. According to the EPA, there are about 150 gas car fires every day, but Steve Hanley did an updated math and found that there were more.

Hanley said that major publications are more likely to report on EV fires and crashes because they are a newer phenomenon. We don't see as many reports about these tragedies as we would if someone died in a gas car accident or fire.

The more electric cars are replaced with gas cars, the better for the environment. It will be important to nail down any genuine safety issues with the EV, because anything that deters potential buyers is an issue.

Isn't it an overstep for an association to tell drivers they can't park in a garage where they paid good money to own a condo?

A researcher says electric cars aren't the answer to climate change.
