The UK-based designer and manufacturer of humanoid robots showed off one of its most realistic creations in a video on the internet. Ameca is a robot that makes facial expressions.
Ameca opens its mouth and raises its eyebrows in awe.
Ameca appears to wake up at the start of the video, as its face conveys a mix of confusion and frustration when it opens its eyes. Ameca opens its mouth and raises its eyebrows when it starts looking at its hands and arms. If you want to understand Ameca smiling and holding a welcoming hand at the viewer, you should watch the end of the video.
Ameca doesn't do parkour like Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot does. Ameca won't be walking and talking with us anytime soon. The bot is unable to walk at the moment, but it wants to be able to do so in the future. According to Engineered Arts, Ameca only handles ultra- realistic bodies and doesn't use artificial intelligence.
If Ameca doesn't scare you out enough, Engineered Arts has a realistic bot named Mesmer. 3D scans of actual humans were used to give the bot accurate bone structure, skin texture, and facial expressions. In a video posted just days after the Ameca showcase, Mesmer makes a series of expressions that look even more convincing, given that this bot has more realistic skin and facial features than Ameca does at the moment.
Ameca and Mesmer will likely be the center of attention at venues and events since they are humanoid robots for entertainment. If you want to see Ameca in action, it will be on display in January.
