Buck O'Neil joins Gil Hodges, Minnie Minoso, others in being elected to baseball's Hall of Fame

6:30 PM.

Buck O'Neil, a champion of Black ballplayers during a monumental, eight-decade career on and off the field, joined Gil Hodges, Minnie Minoso and three others in being elected to the baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Two committees of veterans chose Tony and Jim, along with Bud Fowler, a television commentator after he retired from the Twins.

Only two people are living new members. Dick Allen was one vote shy of election.

The committees met separately in Florida. The big league winter meetings were nixed because of the MLB Lockout, which was scheduled to coincide with the election announcement.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America will vote on new members on July 24, 2022, and the six newcomers will be in the Baseball Hall of Fame on July 24, 2022, along with any new members.

The voting results for the first-time candidates are expected to be released on January 25.
