U.S. officials continued to urge people to get vaccinations and to take precautions such as wearing masks when indoors, as well as to get booster shots, saying that anything that helps protect against delta will also help protect against other variants.

The World Health Organization's Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove told CBS's "Face The Nation" that even if omicron proves less dangerous than delta, it remains problematic.

She said that even if there is a large number of mild cases, some of them will need hospitalizations. Some people will die if they go into the intensive care unit. We don't want to see that happen on top of a difficult situation.

Over 780,000 Americans have been killed in the outbreak, and deaths are running at about 850 per day.

According to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 6,600 new hospital admissions daily.
