Dole was left for dead in Italy in World War II, but he recovered after years of medical treatment. He joined the Senate in 1968. Dole became Gerald Ford's running mate in 1976, but they lost to Jimmy Carter. He was the Senate's longest-serving leader until he was replaced by McConnell. Dole ran for president in 1980, 1988 and 1996, but lost to Bill Clinton. He retired from the Senate. He was married to Sen. Elizabeth Dole and had a daughter, Robin, with his first wife.
