Davis Cup Finals: Great Britain & Serbia given wildcards for 2022 event

Great Britain made it to the knockout stage of the Davis Cup.

The Davis Cup Finals are likely to be spread over two continents after Great Britain and Serbia were given a spot.

The group ties will be played in four different cities if Abu Dhabi is chosen to host the quarter-finals.

European cities are likely to host those, with players likely to cross at least three time zones mid-Finals.

The CEO of Kosmos Tennis said that they would have two days to rest and adapt.

He said that he couldn't see the jet lag if we went to Abu Dhabi.

The International Tennis Federation brokered a five-year deal to have the knock-out stages in Abu Dhabi.

The plan was due to be signed off by the board in Madrid this week, but is now expected to be finalized over the next few weeks.

The Finals will be a 12-day event and will start on November 22.

The group matches and the knock-out stages will be played on indoor hard courts, and players will have two days to acclimatize after taking flights to Abu Dhabi on the night of their final group match.

The group stage of the Olympics makes sense, according to the president of the ITF.

It's going to have that loud passionate audience that we want, and I think that's going to be great.

We want to make sure that wherever we go for the Finals that we have a big base of travelling fans, and that's one of the things that we will be able to do: to make sure that we have subsidies and ways that we can make it easier for.

Ten thousand people bought tickets for the matches in Madrid and Turin. The event was forced to be behind closed doors because of the Austrian lockdown, and 15000 tickets had been sold.

The ITF and Kosmos hope that sponsors will make flights and accommodations cheaper, but the reality is that the event will rely on supporters from the state's expat communities.

The proposed move was not well received by players, with some warning that they will not be prepared to travel to the Middle East so late in the year.

The new format of the Davis Cup is "ridiculous" according to Australia's Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt.

"If they sell the soul of the Davis Cup to the Middle East for another five years, they are really killing the competition," he said last week.

Something had to change because Kosmos was believed to have lost tens of millions of dollars on the first Finals in Madrid. The fee it will receive from Abu Dhabi will make a big difference.

The Russian Tennis Federation and Croatia have already qualified for next year's Finals as a reward for reaching this year's title match.

The final 12 teams will be determined by a round of qualification in March.

Serbia and Great Britain both lost in the semi-finals of this year's event, with Serbia falling to Croatia and the Brits being beaten by Germany.

"Securing the number one in the world in our Finals is the right call," he said.

The Serbian team was very committed this year.

It was a very difficult decision to make. We thought that having the Great Britain team secured would be the right decision because of the threat of not qualification.

Serbia and Leon's Smith team have both been benefited from the playoffs before.

The LTA is interested in hosting one of the November's group stages in the UK. The bidding process will start on December 15.
