Alex Carey will make his Test debut behind the stumps.

The dates are from December 8 to December 12.

Head and Starc are both in the Australia team for the first Test against England in Brisbane.

Head has been batting at five in Tests and has averaged 39.8 runs per game.

Jhye Richardson, the 21-year-old fast bowler who has an average of 28.6 Test wickets, is behind Starc.

Alex Carey will make his Test debut behind the stumps.

Australia team for first Test: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.

Australian expectations are high, but England have a chance.

Pat Cummins revealed the team at a pre-series media launch in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, despite coach Justin Langer saying that Australia wouldn't name their team before the first day of the match.

Most of the line-up was as expected with Marcus Harris opening alongside David Warner after Will Pucovski failed to recover from concussion, while Carey replaces Tim Paine, who dropped out of the squad after resigning from the captaincy over a historical investigation into sexually explicit texts sent to a female colleague

The two main calls were whether Head or Khawaja would bat at five and if Starc would keep his place.

Head has scored 394 runs at 48.25 in the Shield this season with two centuries, including one in his last match, while Khawaja has scored 465 runs at 65.71 with two hundreds.

Left-handed Khawaja only averages 29 in 12 Tests against England, leaving the selectors to opt for Head, who was dropped in Australia's series defeat by India last winter.

Cummins said it was a tight one. Both of them are really good options. We feel lucky to have Ussie in the squad, but we're also thankful for the amount of time that Trav's been playing for us.

We feel like he's ready to go because he's churned out runs in England and here in Australia.

Starc, who has only taken three wickets at an average of 96.66 in two Tests in 2021 so far, saw off competition from Richardson, who took 15 in his past two Shield matches.

Cummins, who will become the first fast bowler to lead Australia since the 1950s, said that he probably won't take the new ball in this series.

The honest answer is no. I probably won't be the first one up, but we've been quite fluid in recent years.

I think Joshy and Starcy will open up with me, even if I haven't made up my mind. That could change. If it's late in the day and there's only a few overs, I might feel like I want to have a crack but it's pretty fluid.

England captain Joe Root was at the same media launch but refused to name his team, saying "all options are on the table, we'll see closer to the game the forecast and how the pitch changes".

The Gabba is a good place to bowl spin, according to England's captain, Joe Root.
