Longest-serving House Republican dismisses GOP critics of McCarthy's leadership: 'Show me anybody else can do the job better'

Don Young has seen a lot of political battles during his nearly 49 years in office, but he supports the bipartisan infrastructure bill championed by President Joe Biden.

Young is the longest-serving Republican in US history, and he has prioritized transportation projects that would benefit his people.

The conservative lawmaker is undaunted by the conservative anger at being one of the 13 House Republicans who backed the infrastructure legislation.

In recent weeks, Trump and many leading conservatives have threatened to find GOP primary challengers for the lawmakers who supported critical funding for the nation's highways, bridges, and roads.

"If they want to campaign against me, have at it," Young said in a recent interview with The Washington Post.

Conservatives are threatening to block the speaker's gavel if the party regains a majority in the lower chamber next year.

The Georgia Republican was removed from her committee assignments in February because of her social-media posts. She and several other conservatives have been critical of McCarthy's leadership.

Young is still standing firm with McCarthy.

He told The Post that he wants to show his critics that anyone else can do the job better than he can. These guys are not thinking very well.
