The governor of Florida is proposing a military force that would be under his control, rather than the Pentagon.
CNN reported that Ron DeSantis would not allow the Florida State Guard to be encumbered by the federal government.
This wasn't just an off-handed suggestion. The legislature is going to be asked for $3.5 million to equip and train his militia, which would include 200 volunteer members.
The report noted that the governor made the announcement just after Lloyd Austin warned that if National Guard members don't get vaccinations, they won't get paid or be able to train.
Under US law, the states share control of the National Guard with the Department of Defense, while a civilian militia like the one that DeSantis is proposing would only be under Florida's command. It seems highly unlikely that members of the Florida State Guard would have to get the vaccine.
It is legal for states to have civilian guards that are outside the purview of the US military.
If Florida establishes a civilian force, it will be the 23rd state to do so in the 18th century. Only 22 states have activated their own civilian forces so far, including New York, Vermont, California, and Washington.
The state of Florida created its own defense force during World War II, but it was only after the war ended that the National Guard members joined the regular military. Every other governor in the US has the right to re-activate or establish his own guard.
The idea of a governor being able to raise their own militia is frightening, but the fact that it is a man who once compared his opponent to a monkey should make us all pause.
Florida is releasing almost a billion Gene-Hacked Mosquitoes.
