The manufacturing and testing operations of Starship are currently located at Starbase, a facility in South Texas. Over the past few years, the site has hosted multiple test flights of prototype vehicles.
The highest distance traveled was just 7.8 miles into the Texas sky. If all goes according to plan, the first orbital test flight of a Starship vehicle will happen soon. The environmental assessment being performed by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is expected to wrap up by the end of the year, according to Musk.
The company signed a 20-year lease agreement with NASA that allows it to use Pad 39A, the jumping-off point for all but two of the agency's crewed Apollo missions and most of its space shuttle flights. The giant Starship requires new infrastructure, but the site already hosts the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.
People and cargo will be taken to the moon, Mars and beyond. The Super Heavy booster is the first stage of the vehicle. A fully stacked Starship is about 30 feet (9 m) taller than NASA's famous moon rocket.
In the fall of 2019, the company began some preliminary work at Pad 39A, but stopped it quickly as operations at Starbase began.
