Elizabeth Holmes trial Week 13 recap: Claims of abuse, a botched attempt to block an exposé, and whistleblower regrets

The former president and COO of Theranos,Sunny Balwani, physically and emotionally abused her. The two met during a trip to China. After being raped while a student, she dropped out of school to build Theranos. She told Balwani that she had been raped and that he was safe now that she had met him.

Balwani sexually abused her, too, according to the Theranos founder. "He would force me to have sex with him when I didn't want to because he wanted me to know he still loved me," she said, according to The New York Times.

After the alleged assault, jurors saw notes on her phone.

Don't enjoy anything about it or who I am if I do it. Hurts a lot. So much. Can't focus on anything except why. Why is it that I hurt myself? Can't even sit up. Lying on the floor. The notes said that it was literally.

He told me that my convictions were wrong and that if I followed my instincts I would fail and that I needed to kill the person I was to become.

Balwani was behind a series of guidelines for her behavior and instructions for her that outlined the pursuit of success in business. Some of the texts between the two of them were recently made public as evidence.

Balwani's lawyers have denied abuse allegations before.

Balwani didn't control her statements to investors, board members, business partners, and journalists despite the abuse she alleges.

The bombshell investigation was tried to be quashed byHolmes.

The Wall Street Journal's investigation into Theranos could expose trade secrets, and that's something that I'm very worried about. She tried to get Murdoch to kill the story about Theranos, which he invested $125 million in.

The story was messed up, according to the woman who handled it.

Others were in charge.

The lab's directors and other leaders made the calls when it came to clinical and scientific decisions, according to testimony by Holmes. She admitted that she had the authority to fire anyone as CEO. She testified that she felt the buck stop with her.

Theranos' handling of people.

An email from Tyler Shultz was presented in court with a response from Holmes, who said that the comments and allegations he was making were very serious. It will take some time before I get back to you on this, because I am going to have the teams go through this line by line.

She relayed Shultz's message to Daniel Young and felt confident that he had alleviated his concerns. She admitted that Cheung was correct in his opinion of Theranos' treatment of him.

"I wish we treated her differently and listened to her," he said.

Theranos did not try to intimidate or retaliate against Shultz and Cheung.
