According to a source, the Saints quarterback will try to play through a mallet finger injury that he suffered in Thursday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys without having surgery.
According to the source, Hill suffered a mallet finger, which is a type of injury that occurs at the tip of the finger. Russell Wilson's injury was more extensive than Hill's, but it was not as serious as Hill's. Wilson had a mallet finger and a fractured joint in the same finger.
Stephania Bell, an injury analyst and physical therapist, said it is possible for Hill to play without surgery.
"My expectation is that they will make a splint that is similar to the one they made on Thursday night so he can feel and grip the ball," Bell said. He'll probably be in a splint when he's not playing. It's not ideal for a quarterback to have a broken finger. He'll probably get used to it and adapt to it. There is no counter to him continuing to play if everyone agrees that he can be functional and comfortable.
In the first quarter of Thursday's 27 17 loss, Hill injured his right throwing hand when he hit another player. He played the rest of the game with a broken finger and finished with four picks.
"It took a little getting used to," Hill said after the game. It affects traction on the ball and stuff if you put something else on the finger. It was okay.
In his first start of the 2021 season, Hill passed for 260 yards and two scores and also had four turnovers, three of which came in the fourth quarter. He ran the ball 11 times for 101 yards despite the partially torn plantar fascia that he suffered in Week 10.
He played with a lot of heart and guts. After the game, Sean Payton said that the Saints didn't help him in the first half.
If Hill is healthy enough to play at full strength, he could be in the starting role for the Saints in Week 14 against the New York Jets. Despite the ugly result and fourth-quarter implosion, Hill's running ability did provide at least some element of juice to an offense that has flatlined ever since original starting QB Jameis Winston suffered a tornACL in Week 8.
The Saints have lost five in a row since the injury to Winston. After replacing Jameis Winston in the second quarter of the Saints' Week 8 game, veteran backup Trevor Siemian led the team to a victory. He went 0-4 as a starter and the offense went through a lot of injuries.
The Saints are hoping to get running back Alvin Kamara and offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk back soon.
After going 3-1 as an injury replacement for Drew Brees, Hill is now 3-2 in his career as a starter. In those games, he completed over 70% of his passes, for 832 yards, four touchdown and two interceptions. He ran the ball 39 times for 209 yards and four touchdown but lost three of them.
If he continues to play his usual role as a quarterback, running back, receiver, andTE, he could be worth up to 95 million dollars over the next four years.
