Sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday that Oregon has offered a contract extension to football coach Mario Cristobal in order to keep him in Eugene.

There is increasing chatter that Cristobal would be the main target at Miami if the Hurricanes fire him. The Miami native played and coached at the school. He won two national championships with the Hurricanes.

Sources told ESPN that this extension was aggressive and would be in the range of other deals struck during this hiring cycle.

Two of the past three seasons have seen Cristobal get extensions. In December of last year, he received a new six-year, $27.3 million deal. He could make more than $5.5 million this season, including incentives.

The winner of the Utah and Oregon game will play in the conference title game.

If he leaves for another school before January 14, he would owe the school $9 million.

The Oregonian reported that he had a contract extension offer.
