VoLTE: How to use it and why you should care

Harish Jonnalagadda is a source.

There's good reason to know how to use Voice over Long Term Evolution, or VoLTE, and why you should care. All of the major US carriers have made it easy for you to use 4G on their networks. If you upgraded your phone in the last few years, you can probably use it. Setting up VoLTE on your phone is very easy if you have the right phone and carrier.

Let's take a closer look.

When your carrier allows you to place a phone call over your 4G connection instead of the older voice networks, it's called Voice over LTE. For example, if you wanted to make a voice call, you would have to use 1XRTT for it. This used to be the reason why the phones couldn't use both data and voice at the same time. When talking to someone on the other line, AT&T and T-Mobile used a combination of 3G and 4G for data, and dropped down to 2G for calls. These scenarios are no longer necessary with VoLTE.

Both network types now have the same ability to use more bandwidth to make phone calls with higher quality audio. When you are on a call with someone else who is using VoLTE, you can see the difference in call quality on both ends. If you are calling someone near you, it's a cool thing to test for yourself, and you'll notice calls connect faster if you are near them.

Which U.S. carriers support voice over internet protocol?

All of the major US carriers support VoLTE.

HD Voice is referred to as HD Voice by some carriers as a way of marketing it. Most people will be using HD Voice on their phone calls even if they don't know it. HD Voice is used by most of the carriers.

HD Voice uses a data connection to complete the call instead of using a wi-fi connection, which is similar to the way that wi-fi calling tech is used. Quality can increase on all carriers if your connection is strong. HD Voice will cost carriers less in the long run, so carriers want their customers to use it if possible.

The only way to make calls is through the all-digital network, with some carriers such as Visible already moving to it.

How can I use the service?

Any new phone you buy today should support VoLTE, and every major carrier supports it. There is a setting in the main settings that is called Cellular Data Options. The network indicator on the phone will reset when you change this selection.

The option will be in the connections category in the phone's settings. It's similar to the option under the network category on other phones.

There are a few things that need to be perfect for VoLTE to work. You will need a device that supports it. Most phones released in the last couple of years should be onboard, even though it will need to be confirmed on each device.

The goal for carriers is to have everyone call on the internet using the name of the internet. When this happens, features like VoNR (5G), and wi-fi calling will fall into the same category and allow calling when connected to any secure internet source. As more efficient 5G networks mature, carriers will want customers to stay on the tower as much as possible.

What else do I need to know?

The source of the information is the Android Central.

HD Voice/VoLTE calls are counted towards the minutes in one's monthly bucket by all carriers, even though they use the same data network as video streaming or browsing the web. The video portion of a chat will use data, while the voice portion will use minutes. If you're going to make a video call, be aware that it uses a lot of data, so be careful.

It's worth noting that all major carriers offer the option of using a wi-fi network to route voice calls through areas of poor cellular coverage or just to improve call quality. If you live in a dead zone, you can use wi-fi calling to make calls.

It's good to see progress from mobile carriers as spectrum becomes more valuable ahead of further 5G deployment.

Do I need to upgrade my phone?

Most people will upgrade before any network requires them to do so. If you have an older phone that doesn't support VoLTE and are just looking for a more consistent performance, then you should upgrade to one of the best phones with support for it.

Some AT&T customers were told in 2020 that they needed to upgrade their phones. AT&T plans to completely transition to 4G and 5G once it stops using its older network. T-Mobile will be shutting down its 3G service in 2022.

AT&T is not the first carrier to stop supporting older phones. Maintaining equipment for all of its legacy networks for a few customers that insist on using dated phones is a huge waste. If you're not using a compatible phone, you should have already been contacted by AT&T, because they will be shutting down their 3G network in February 2022. If you don't know what you need to do, you should contact customer support for your carrier.

AT&T has one of the most developed 5G networks, with both millimeter-wave and low-band coverage. Customers with phones that can connect to both networks are able to do so. AT&T's 5G network now covers more than 200 million people in more than 12,000 cities. AT&T's 5G coverage is still spotty, but it is growing quickly.

Premium data with 5G access.

The AT&T's unlimited extra plan has 50GB of premium data, 15GB of mobile hotspot data, and 5G access, making it one of the best ways to use the AT&T network.

AT&T is building two networks for 5G. A low-band sub-9 5G deployment is one network. The majority of customers will see 5G. The other network is called 5G+ and is a high-band network that has a limited range. AT&T's current 5G phones are all low-band, with a few high-end phones supporting the faster network.

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, or DSS, is a technique that reuses spectrum currently used for 4G with both 4G and 5G as the need grows. Unlike refarming spectrum from one network to another, and simply moving capacity from one network to the other, DSS is able to keep both networks active and allocate portions of that spectrum as needed to either 4G or 5G. On June 5, 2020, AT&T began to deploy DSS to improve 5G customer service without reducing capacity on the older 4G network. Performance on this technology will be dependent on the spectrum and load in the area, but likely won't be much faster than LTE.

AT&T won a lot of mid-band spectrum in the FCC auctions, which will be used to increase capacity to its 5G network. T-Mobile has been able to integrate its 2.5 GHz spectrum into its network due to the fact that AT&T spent $23.4 billion on 3.7 GHz spectrum. This upgrade will likely take years to deploy and will likely not reach customers until the late half of 2021. C-band gives AT&T room to grow in a crowded and competitive market.

AT&T began preparing its towers for a 5G network. The network capacity on the back end for 5G was added. If you see 5GE on your AT&T phone, it's not 5G, it's 4GLTE with tower upgrades that make the most of the technology.

AT&T's standard coverage maps now show True 5G, which makes it easier to see how far this coverage has gone. It takes a while for these maps to be updated, so check out the entire list for the most up-to-date locations.

Which cities are covered by AT&T's 5G network?

AT&T's low-band nationwide 5G network is now worthy of being on its full coverage map. That's the best place to start looking for coverage. You can find out which network is best for 5G in your area by keeping up to date on 5G coverage on all carriers.

For the most part, you'll be using the larger low-band 5G coverage for at least the next few years. If you have a phone that supports AT&T's 5G+ network, you can still get great speeds in several U.S. cities.

5G access is included in all of AT&T's unlimited plans. You won't get access to 5G if you go for a data plan such as the 4GB plan. Most of the best 5G plans treat its low-band nationwide 5G data the same as its high-band data.

Several of AT&T's older unlimited plans now have 5G support. It's great for people who want to upgrade to a 5G phone but don't want to lose their current promotion or just go through the hassle of chaning a plan. This applies to all unlimited accounts.

The AT&T plans will have access to 5G service with a compatible phone.

Cricket Wireless launched 5G support on both AT&T's network. Cricket has top-end unlimited plan plans that include 5G. Cricket is one of the best places to get 5G access with a lot of data. Cricket 5G is being called Cricket 5G, whilemmWave is being called Cricket 5G+, matching AT&T's own branding.

AT&T is focusing on two main 5G technologies. AT&T is using a technology called millimeter wave. The high-frequency spectrum above 24 GHz is used for coverage. The spectrum is large enough to allow for speeds of over 2 Gbps in ideal conditions. The early prospects are good, but it's not certain how this will hold up under a true public load.

AT&T has launched a low-band 5G network. The majority of customers will be able to connect to this network since it has better coverage. This service is very similar to what T-Mobile has. This means that speeds are typically faster than those that can be delivered with the help of the internet. The other benefits of 5G, such as better traffic management and capacity, will be worth the trade once the network is built out.

AT&T has begun using some of its spectrum for 5G with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, which will perform like its existing low-band 5G network. The spectrum will be able to be used on the 4G network or the 5G network as needed without taking either completely offline. AT&T will be able to smoothly transition the use of its large amounts of spectrum dedicated to its 4G and 5G networks.

AT&T will begin to roll out 5G in late 2020 based on its new C-Band spectrum. AT&T will be able to add speed and capacity to its 5G network with spectrum left over for future expansion. AT&T will be able to increase network density where it needs it most without having to invest in millimeter wave expansion.

To get access to both networks, phones need to support 5G bands n5 and n260.

What is 5Ge?

The same thing happened on day one. Over time, the underlying technology has been upgraded more and more. The most recent version is called LTE Advanced. This tech can produce some very high speeds that are more than enough for almost any application, and it is the best consumer wireless technology outside of 5G. This isn't abnormal since it's designed to evolve and grow as technology improves. It's a good idea to make sure you have good coverage when you don't have a 5G connection.

AT&T is moving its Advanced towers along a path towards 5G due to the high-speed backhauls that can support 5G speeds. The service has been renamed to 5Ge with a software update. Not everyone agrees that this is the first step towards a 5G network.

The 5Ge network is the best of all the networks. If you are using an older phone that is slow in crowded areas, it may be worth getting a phone that supports these enhancements. Don't expect speeds to be a huge difference, but the connection quality can be improved.

Is 5G worth it to most people?

4G is fast enough for most people. Good speeds lead to increased data usage as the quality of media improves and the download sizes grow. There will be a hard ceiling on the amount of data one tower can deliver, and the user experience will suffer.

If you're ready for a new phone, you'll probably get it with 5G because AT&T's unlimited plans now include it.
