According to a report, Sony is planning to create a subscription service. The company already offers two subscription services, PS Plus and PS Now, and they will be merged into this new offering. The reporter said that Sony will likely keep the PS Plus brand, butphase out the PS Now brand.

The service would have three tiers. One would offer current PS Plus perks, another would include a catalog of PS4 and eventually PS5 games, and a third would have a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games. The service would be launched in the spring.

Sony didn't reply to a request for comment. Some details of the service, including its membership tiers, may not be finalized.

Sony could use Microsoft's cloud platform.

The company is putting resources into expanding its efforts in cloud gaming, perhaps to keep up with efforts like the RTX 3080 tier of GeForce Now and Microsoft's Xbox Series X upgrade for xCloud. It is not clear if Sony's service will run on Microsoft's platform after the deal was signed between Microsoft and Sony in 2019.

The new service sounds like it would be similar to Microsoft's Game Pass Ultimate subscription, which allows people to play online, access a huge library of titles from Microsoft and other companies, and stream games from the cloud. The Game Pass Ultimate plan is the only tier of services offered by Sony that includes cloud gaming.

One of the perks of Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate is access to Microsoft first-party titles, but that might not be available with Spartacus. Schreier said that he didn't expect Sony to include its big new games day one like Game Pass does.
