The Crumbleys were charged with four counts of manslaughter each, according to the prosecutor.
McDonald said that a teacher found a note on Crumbley's desk with the words "The thoughts won't stop, help me" written on it.
McDonald said that Crumbley's parents failed to ask if he had the gun James purchased days before or where the gun was, and failed to inspect his backpack before leaving the school.
On November 21, the day before the shooting, a teacher observed a student researching on his cell phone in class and contacted his mother, who responded in a text message to her son. I am not angry at you. McDonald said that you have to learn not to get caught.
McDonald said in an interview with a local radio station that their actions went far beyond negligent, and that the gun used in the shooting seemed to have been freely available to that individual.
The boy has been charged with two dozen crimes, including four counts of first-degree murder and one count of terrorism causing death.
Legal experts told the Associated Press that parents are rarely charged in school shootings involving their children, although many children get the weapons from their parents or relatives. McDonald admitted the terrorism charge filed against Ethan was not a typical charge. McDonald said the charge was designed to address the students and staff who had suffered from the shooting, but were not killed. She asked during a Wednesday press conference, "What about all the children who ran, screaming, hiding under desks?" They are all victims and so is the community. The charge of terrorism reflects that.
The key background.
The shooting at Oxford High School was the worst school shooting in the US in three years. Within minutes of arriving on the scene, officers took Crumbley into custody and recovered a Sig Sauer handgun. Four days before the shooting, Crumbley's father legally purchased the weapon. The parents of Crumbley refused to allow investigators to question their child, according to the Sheriff's Office. The Detroit Free Press reports that Crumbley was denied bond during his first court appearance.
