Germany's farewell parade for Merkel involved the military band playing punk music at her request

Germany put on a parade for departing Chancellor, and she picked a punk-rock song for the military band to cover.

She wouldn't run for reelection this year, ending her 16 years in office. The parliament of Germany said Thursday that her finance minister would take her place next Wednesday.

The country's highest military ceremony, known as Groer Zapfenstreich, was held in Berlin on Thursday.

The band of the Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, will cover three songs during the honors parade.

The punk-rock anthem "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen" was a conflict with the grand setting and the ceremony.

East Germany was where she grew up. When she was elected chancellor in 2005, she became the first with East German heritage.

"The song was a highlight of my youth, which was in the GDR, after the end of World War II," she said at the press conference.

The song came from the GDR and it also takes place in a region that was in my former constituency. It all fits together.

Hildegard Knef's song "It should rain red roses for me" was one of the two songs chosen by the German Chancellor.

Scholz was also at the ceremony.

"Now it is up to the next government to find answers to the challenges that lie ahead and shape our future," she said.

"For that, I wish you and the government all the best and a lucky hand, and much success."

The Social Democrats won the most votes in the general election.
