Were you one of the 53,000 people who attended the convention in New York City? One of the first cases of the new omicron variant was a man who attended the convention and likely caught it there.

One of this year's attendees tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19. The attendee developed mild symptoms on November 22, and was tested on November 24, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Less than a week after being classified by the World Health Organization as a new coronaviruses variant, Omicron is now also found in California, Minnesota, Colorado and New York State. Several people have tested positive. New York governor Kathy Hochul said at a press conference that her state alone has five confirmed omicron cases, and NYC mayor Bill de Blasio warned New Yorkers that they should assume there is community spread. Hochul said that the US cases of the omicron variant have been minor, with very light symptoms, and that the man who attended Anime NYC has already recovered.

The Minnesota Department of Health says that the man from Minnesota had already been vaccinations and developed mild symptoms the day after the convention. The New York Times said he may have gotten it at the convention.

Anyone who attended the conference should get tested immediately and take additional precautions, according to a statement from de Blasio. I urge all New Yorkers to get vaccinations, wear a face mask, and help our city beat the virus once and for all.
