The California native accounted for more yards than any other player in the history of the program.

His transfer could benefit both parties.

A big year at another school is what Martinez can ride off into the sunset with. He's probably done all he can in Lincoln.

The Power Five should be interested in the 6'2" signal-caller because of his dual-threat abilities.

Transferring and finding the right fit can work wonders. He followed two mediocre years at East Carolina with a monster season at Washington State in which he won the Pac-12 offensive player of the year.

Maybe a change of scenery will help him raise his ceiling.

The Cornhuskers were able to wipe the slate clean after they fired Matt Lubick and three other offensive assistants.

The transfer portal has already been used by Oklahoma's Spencer Rattler, UCF's Jake Haener, and LSU's Myles Brennan. Even if Scott Frost is unable to land one of the four, there will be more quarterbacks looking to move.

Big things might be expected from Smothers.

Smothers was a dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class, and he ran for 64 yards and two touchdown in his only start.

After Nebraska finished 3-9 in 2022, Scott Frost is likely to be sitting on the hot seat. If a coach isn't delivering results, then being a school legend doesn't matter.

Identifying the right starting quarterback to succeed Martinez will go a long way towards turning the tenure around.
