Bundesliga: German crowds to be reduced after Covid-19 restrictions reintroduced

The game between Manchester City and RB Leipzig will be played behind closed doors.

The maximum attendance for a match in the Bundesliga is 15,000, after Germany reintroduced Covid-19 restrictions on Thursday.

The leaders of Germany's 16 states agreed on several measures being put in place.

There are rising cases of Covid infections, so fans are being reduced at outdoor and indoor sports events.

Most stadiums in Germany were operating at full capacity this season.

In states with high infections, sports events must be canceled, and fans must wear masks.

German authorities fear that a fourth wave of Covid could overload intensive care units. More than 73,000 new infections and 388 deaths were reported on Thursday.

The premier of the southern state of Bavaria had called for matches to go ahead without fans.

He said that if necessary, Bavaria would implement the step alone.

The game between Manchester City and RB Leipzig in the group stage of the European soccer competition will be played behind closed doors because of the partial lockdown of the state of Saxony.

Christian Seifert, chief executive of the German Football League, said that a temporary limit on the number of fans in the stadium is understandable.

The DFL hopes that the decision by the federal government and the states leads to an improvement of the situation.
