Former Steelers LB Ryan Shazier: Roethlisberger Should Consider Retiring Next Year

Ryan Shazier thinks the writing is on the wall for Ben Roethlisberger.

Shazier said on Wednesday that the legendary quarterback should retire in 2022.

The game will tell you when it's time. I think it's time for Ben to step away from the game. Ben is known for being a tough quarterback who is able to extend plays and allow his team to make big plays because of how much of an athlete he was. He knew how to change the game. I think he's losing a lot of that.

The two-time Pro Bowler believes that the retirement of Roethlisberger could allow the Pittsburgh to trade for either Rodgers or Wilson.

Roethlisberger is one of the greatest quarterbacks in franchise history, but he and the Steelers have a marriage of convenience.

Pittsburgh's salary cap situation was so bad that keeping him under center was the only realistic option.

Losing Roethlisberger via trade, release or retirement would have left the team with $22.25 million in dead money.

His cap hit was brought down to $25.9 million through a restructured contract. Big Ben's retirement will result in Pittsburgh having to absorb $10.3 million in dead money in 2022, as a result of the restructure.

Shazier probably speaks for a lot of people in the Steel City, so that's a bargain the Steelers might be willing to make.

Roethlisberger has thrown for 2,522 yards, 14 touchdown and six interceptions, and his 43.1 quarterback rating is on pace to be his lowest since the stat began in 2006

The six-time Pro Bowler's arm strength is starting to decline as he gets older. His intended air yards are the fifth-lowest in the league, and 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611 888-270-6611

There was hope that Matt Canada would be promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2020 and that Randy Fichtner would be replaced.

The quarterback and the offensive coordinators haven't seen eye to eye.

Since Roethlisberger's arrival in 2004, the.500 is the worst it has gotten. It has become clear that a transition is inevitable.

Pittsburgh could possibly land a marquee quarterback and keep going. The front office will have to rip off the bandage and expect a lean year or two while they look for Roethlisberger's successor.
