Brian Kelly joins Nick Saban, Steve Sarkisian and others who abruptly left for new positions

Play.

It wasn't easy to leave Notre Dame for LSU.

As he is introduced at LSU, Brian Kelly reflects on how he handled his departure from Notre Dame. The song is called "1:10."

The time is 1:30 AM.

Sports fans don't like to see a scene like that. Let's set it up.

Your team is doing well. The head coach's name is being considered for a different position. There is a slight panic set in. The coach says everything the fans and players want to hear, that he isn't going anywhere soon. Relax, breathe in the sigh of relief.

It's a scene that many know. The coaches double down on their current positions. It can, though it doesn't always happen. And it does. The result of such a move is a lot of emotions.

There is a carousel of college coaches who have said one thing and done another. The colleges, athletic directors, players and recruits were left in scramble mode after some notable misunderstandings.

"unless that fairy godmother comes by with that $250 million check", said Brian Kelly.

The former Notre Dame football coach left the program this week as the winningest head coach in program history with 113 victories in 12 seasons.

College football's coaching carousel is spinning like it never has before, but we're here to make sense of it all.

Top candidates have a buzz.

All the hires were graded by Rittenberg.

What's next for Notre Dame?

Kelly told reporters that he wouldn't be leaving Notre Dame for another job. I mean, what about Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin? My wife would want to look at it first if that $250 million check came by. I would have to run it by her.

LSU signed Kelly to a 10-year, $95 million contract eight days later. Kelly said he didn't see it happening.

Kelly said there was no plan in place as he entered the 2021 season.

The Fighting Irish are in the midst of a new plan without Kelly, who had been at the helm since 2010.

I guess I have to say it. I will not be the Alabama coach.

It could be one of the biggest what-ifs in football history.

It's almost impossible to think of Alabama football without thinking about Nick Saban. Before he became the coach of the Alabama, he was the coach of the Miami Dolphins.

I guess I have to say it. In December of 2006 he said he wouldn't be the Alabama coach. Rumors that Alabama was trying to get him to return to the college football sideline were false.

"I'm not going to be the Alabama head coach"- Nick Saban.

The OldTakesExposed wrote about freezing cold on December 21, 2017:

The five-year contract with Miami was signed on Christmas Day 2004. Even though he went just 15-17 in two seasons, he was poised to help rebuild the Dolphins.

The Tide had a new head coach in January of 2007. The agreement was for eight years and a guaranteed $32 million, which is still with Alabama to this day.

He is considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, as he has won six national titles with Alabama.

Roy Williams said he could give a s--- about North Carolina.

When Roy Williams is mentioned, most people think of Carolina blue and white. Williams was the head coach at Kansas for 15 years.

The Jayhawks won 14 NCAA tournaments under Williams, including title games in 1991 and 2003

Williams turned down the Tar Heels in 2000. Three years later, speculation grew again.

You can win up to $1 million with your bowl picks. Pick your favorites.

A reporter asked Williams if he would be leaving for UNC after the title game.

"I could give a s--- about North Carolina right now," Williams said in a live CBS interview. 13 kids are in the locker room that I love.

Less than a week later, Williams was heading back to Chapel Hill. It's difficult to say no to Dean Smith twice.

Jeff Lebo, a former North Carolina player, said at the time that the disappointment of knowing what happened probably weighed on Smith.

Williams retired from basketball in April 2021.

"I am happy where I am and there is still much work to be done", said John Calipari.

Calipari left for Memphis after eight successful basketball seasons at UMass. After three campaigns and an NCAA tournament appearance, rumors immediately started flying that he would leave the Tigers.

You can play for free and compete for a chance to win. Pick your favorites.

In a statement in April 2003 Calipari said that he would stay at Memphis until he got the job done. The task at the University of Memphis is the same as it was at the University of Massachusetts. I stayed there for a long time.

Due to the winning ways of the program, Calipari said it was expected that he would be thrown around for new roles. His contract with Memphis was extended through the 2006 season.

"I want Tiger fans to know that I am happy and that there is still a lot of work to be done," Calipari said.

It wasn't until four days after Memphis was eliminated from the NCAA tournament by Missouri that Calipari agreed to be the head coach at Kentucky. Those at Memphis were upset by the move.

"Why did he wait so long?" was the question asked by former Calipari assistant BruiserFlint. He said he didn't have to take the job. He is 50 years old. He was happy at Memphis. It was a good place for him to live. At the end of the day, it's Kentucky.

Since joining Kentucky, Calipari has taken the team to four Final Fours, winning the NCAA championship in 2012

I love my job. I hope I get to coach here longer than Don James did.

It was not as dramatic as that of the aforementioned coaches, but it did raise some eyebrows.

Since Darrell Royal left for Texas in 1956, the only other Washington coach to leave for another position was Steve Sarkisian.

USC is a good place, don't get me wrong. "I had a wonderful time there, but we are doing something special here," said Steve Sarkisian, a former USC assistant.

I love my job. "I hope I get to coach here longer than Don James did," he said in the interview. I hope I win more titles than Don James did. Things happen in my favor, not in my favor. That is the reality of life.

When he became the head coach at Southern California in December of 2013, he was in the middle of a contract that paid him about $2 million per year, but he was paid more in the final season.

In 2001 to 2003 and 2005 to 2008, he was an assistant with the USC.

After taking over the program in 2009, he led them to a 34-29 record and three straight seven-win campaigns.

USC eventually fired Sarkisian in October 2015, after he took an indefinite leave of absence due to appearing at team functions under the influence.

After working for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League, Steve Sarkisian worked for Nick Saban at the University of Alabama. The University of Texas hired Steve Sarkisian as head coach in the year 2021.

They will have to carry me out of here in a pine box.

In 1998, Tommy Tuberville said that he would have to leave Ole Miss in a pine box. Tuberville was the head football coach at the University of Mississippi in 1995 and went 25-20.

He signed a five-year deal to become the new head coach at auburn. Tuberville did not win a championship with the Tigers, but he did guide them to eight bowl berths.

Tuberville had a bolt decades later. In December of 2012 Tuberville left a dinner with recruits and never came back.

His staff found out that he had taken a new job at Cincinnati.

Tuberville said there's always a next step. I'm going to ask the question, why did you come to Cincinnati?

The pep rally for the basketball team was held that weekend, and Tuberville had a connection to the athletics director.

Tuberville said in a May interview that the dinner incident never happened.

I left the restaurant when everyone else left. He said that he paid the bill. I was thinking about it after Cincinnati called. There was nothing final. I was looking for a job at Texas Tech. I took them out to eat with a couple of players and some other people. They left. I left. Stay there all night? It all got blown out of proportion.
