The Biden Administration is expected to extend its mask mandate for individuals traveling on airplanes, trains and buses and at airports and train stations through March 18, as federal and local officials prepare for the coronaviruses.

A masked passenger is seated on a flight from San Francisco, California to Newark, New Jersey. The airline industry is having to consolidate flights due to the fact that virus dissemination on flights is low when people are socially distant. Michael Loccisano is a photographer.

The mandate extension is expected to be announced on Thursday, according to sources.

The mandate was first instituted in February and is set to end in January.

The news was not confirmed by the transportation security administration.

The fines for violating the mandate were doubled in September, and those who refuse to wear masks could be fined up to $3,000. In September, the agency said it had received over 4,000 reports of mask-related non-compliance and referred 126 passengers for penalties.

The number is big.

2,457,000. The highest single-day figure since the beginning of the Pandemic began was how many people were screened by the TSA at travel security on Sunday. The travel volume was down from the previous year.

The first reported US case of the coronaviruses omicron variant was discovered in San Francisco on Wednesday in an individual who recently returned from a trip to South Africa. Some experts fear that the variant may be more transmissible than previous strains. In response to the variant, the Biden Administration suspended travel from eight countries in southern Africa last week, and it is reportedly considering requiring all international travelers, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, to get tested for Covid-19 one day prior to their flight and again upon arrival. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and other city officials on Monday urged residents to wear masks indoors in response to the omicron variant.
