Now Open: Tommie Hollywood, An Intriguing New Hyatt Hotel

Hyatt is growing nicely in Los Angeles. The Thompson Hollywood opened in August and the Hotel Figueroa joined The Unbound Collection from Hyatt in June. There is a Hyatt in Los Angeles that has a connection to Thompson.

The basics of Tommie Hollywood.

The new Hyatt property is called Tommie Hollywood. There are over 200 guest rooms at Tommie Hollywood. Hyatt is a mid-range collection of independent hotels.

The new Thompson Hollywood is on the same block as the hotel. There are 15,000 square feet of food and beverage spaces at Tommie Hollywood. The basics of the two food outlets are listed here.

The hotel's signature restaurant is called KA'teen and is inspired by the city of Tulum.
Desert 5 Spot is the hotel's rooftop lounge with live music and is intended to reflect 1970s vintage Palm Springs with the same eccentric charm of Pioneertown.

The Tommie Hollywood lobby is located in Hollywood.

Tommie Hollywood is a rooftop bar.

The standard rooms at Tommie Hollywood are 195 square feet and feature hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows. The biggest room at the hotel is 388 square feet. The suites are on the top floor and have 12 foot ceilings.

The standard rooms are small and the suites are the size of standard rooms at many other hotels.

The Tommie Hollywood room is located in the Hollywood area.

Tommie Hollywood rates and points requirements.

Hotels do a lot of tweaking of their rates. In August, when I wrote about the hotel, rates started at $250+ per night. They did drop before opening. The hotel in Los Angeles is much more expensive than I thought, given the size of the rooms and the general demand for travel in the area.

Tommie Hollywood is a Category 4 World of Hyatt property.

During standard pricing periods, a free night redemption here will cost 15,000 points.
You can redeem category 1-4 free night certificates at this hotel, which is exciting, since it isn't possible at other Hyatt hotels in Los Angeles.

What is the relationship between Tommie and Thompson?

There are two Hyatts on the same block, one named Thompson and the other named Tommie, so what is the connection? There is a story there.

Thompson hotels joined the World of Hyatt after Hyatt acquired Two Roads.
The Tommie brand was supposed to be a budget-friendly version of Thompson, with smaller rooms, but still a focus on food and beverage.
The Tommie brand was put under the JdV umbrella, which is one of Hyatt's independent hotel brands, when the company acquired Two Roads.
Thompson and Tommie have the same focus on food and beverage outlets, as well as the same room design.
There will be a Tommie Austin opening in the coming weeks.

The setup is no doubt odd, as Tommie was originally intended to be a Thompson connection, but with Hyatt acquiring Two Roads, the decision was made to brand these Tommie hotels as JdV properties.

The Tommie Hollywood officially opened in December of 2021. The Thompson Hollywood is on the same block as the hotel, but it has smaller rooms. It is great to finally have a Category 4 World of Hyatt property in the Los Angeles area, as that will be useful for redeeming points and free night certificates.

The Tommie brand was originally supposed to be a budget version of Thompson, with smaller rooms. The strategy has changed over time, and Tommie hotels are now part of JdV.
