According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris has joined the cast of the upcoming Disney movie, which will feature the voices of Sisu, the dragon in Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as Katy in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Nicolas Cage plays the main villain of the film, who is also one of the major characters in the book.
The novel will be set in a contemporary setting rather than the 19th century where it was written. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Awkwafina will be helping Renfield work against Count Dracula.
The failed attempts to get the Dark Universe remake of Universal's beloved Universal Monsters properties off the ground a few years ago came to a halt after less-than- expected success of The Mummy and Dracula Untold. The success of 2020's invisible man has led to the studio wanting to try again at a modern-reinterpretation of its classic creature features. A potential new Wolfman movie is in the works with Ryan Gosling eyed for the title role, while Karyn Kusama is working on a new vampire movie. James Wan is producing a new Van Helsing film, which is also being directed by Overlord's Julius Avery.
Renfield will begin production in New Orleans in early 2022.
