Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo to have surgery for torn ligament in right thumb

Adebayo will have surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral in his left thumb.

Adebayo is expected to be out for four to six weeks, which will cause him to miss 15 to 20 games.

Adebayo, 24, has blossomed into one of the NBA's best two-way centers, able to switch out onto virtually any guard defensively while also being a hub of Miami's offensive attack. Adebayo is averaging 18.7 points, 10.2 rebound, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals per game this season.

Miami's third defeat in six games was due to the injury he suffered during Monday's loss to the Denver Nuggets. On Wednesday night, the Heat play the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dedmon is likely to replace Adebayo in the starting lineup. Markieff Morris has been out since early November after he injured his neck in a loss to Denver.

The findings of the league's tampering investigation, which were released earlier Wednesday, show that the Heat's sign-and-trade deal with All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry cost them a future second-round pick.

Miami is two games behind the Brooklyn Nets and two games behind a five-way tie for the final playoff spot in the East.
