The White House said Wednesday that a person in California had become the first in the US to be exposed to the omicron variant of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The person who tested positive was a traveler who returned from South Africa. Fauci said that the person was not getting a booster shot and was having some symptoms.

The Biden administration restricted travel from Southern Africa because of the variant. There are cases in about two dozen other nations.

Fauci said that it was just a matter of time before the first case of omicron would be found in the US.

Everyone who had close contact with the person was tested and all were negative.

The sequence was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after the University of California, San Francisco conducted Genomic Sequencing.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is taking steps to make it harder for travelers from overseas to be tested for diseases in the U.S. It was considering mandating testing after arrival.

The officials said that the measures would only buy time for the country to learn more about the new variant and to take appropriate precautions, but that it was inevitable that it would arrive in the U.S.

The new variant of the vaccine is unknown, as well as whether it makes people more seriously ill, and whether it can affect the vaccine's effectiveness. Fauci said more information about the strain would be known in two to four weeks.

The announcement of the first US case of the disease comes as President Joe Biden prepares to outline his strategy to fight the disease. Biden said that the omicron variant was not a cause for panic and that it was a cause for concern.

Biden and public health officials have become more urgent in their pleas for more Americans to get vaccinations, and for those who have been vaccine-vaccinated to get booster shots to maximize their protection against the virus.
