First Case Of Omicron Variant Discovered In California

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the first case of the new omicron variant in the U.S. on Wednesday, after a traveler in California who had been to South Africa tested positive.

The traveler returned from South Africa on November 22 and tested positive on November 29

The CDC confirmed the diagnosis after the University of California at San Francisco conducted genogenomics.

The individual is currently in self-quarantine and close contacts have tested negative for the virus.

According to the CDC, the individual had mild symptoms that appeared to be improving.

Fauci said that the individual has not received a booster shot.

Travelers who have been in eight African countries will have to give their contact information to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
