Coronavirus: Heathrow Airport opens dedicated red list country terminal

Terminal 4 was reopened as a dedicated facility for processing arrivals from red list countries.

It said the measure would keep people from going to destinations on the high-risk list.

The red list was put on hold in southern Africa due to concerns about the Omicron coronaviruses variant.

People entering the UK from those locations must stay in a hotel for 11 nights.

The cost is for solo travellers.

The red list arrivals facility at Terminal 3 was opened in June after concerns were raised that allowing passengers to mix with those who had flown in from other locations could increase the spread of the virus.

The terminal was closed in early November after the removal of the final seven countries from the list.

The facility was open for business again.

People entering the UK must have a negative result from a PCR test before they can travel.

They used to only have to take a cheaper test if their test result was positive.

Emma Gilthorpe said the introduction of restrictions for international travel would be a blow for British exporters and those wanting to visit friends and relatives.

She said that keeping the changes under constant review and a government commitment to remove red list countries as soon as possible will help.

"Heathrow maintains the highest levels of Covid-secure measures to ensure our passengers, colleagues and partners know that the airport is a safe place to travel to and from."
