Greece plans to impose monthly fines of $113 for people over 60 who refuse the COVID-19 vaccine

Greece will impose monthly fines of $113 on people who haven't booked their first shot by January 16 if they don't book by that date.

The money from the fines will go to Greece's healthcare system, according to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Greece reported record-high levels of hospitalizations.

About 500,000 people over the age of 60 haven't received their jabs, according to the New York Times. Greece's 11 million population is fully vaccine free.

The new mandate is an act of justice for the vaccine recipients, according to The Times.

The decision is to be brought to a vote in parliament, and lawmakers are expected to approve it.

Greece banned unvaccinated people from indoor spaces on November 22. In August, it banned unvaccinated people from indoor eateries, bars, and clubs.

The unvaccinated have "mild consequences" if they get sick, so we're up against a vaccine-free world, said Mitsotakis earlier this month.

Greece is the first country in the EU to have a vaccine mandate for certain age groups.

Austria became the first European country to make the vaccine mandatory for everyone. There have been a lot of coronaviruses in the last two months.

Germany's Chancellor-elect has voiced his support for a vaccine mandate for all Germans by February.
