A federal judge in Louisiana issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services from implementing the healthcare worker vaccine mandate while a legal challenge is pending.

A federal judge in Missouri temporarily blocked the vaccine mandate in the other 10 states.

In a ruling, Doughty said that the vaccine mandate was probably not legal and sided with the people who argued it was irrational.

Federal officials had argued to the court that the mandate was legal and constitutional, and that it would protect hospital patients from coronaviruses.

Before the ruling, the rule required all staff to be fully vaccined by January 4.

There is no question that Congress should make the vaccine mandatory for healthcare workers, according to the ruling.

A federal judge in Kentucky temporarily barred the Biden Administration from implementing a vaccine mandate for federal contractors in three states that had sued over the policy.

The key background.

In recent months, President Joe Biden has rolled out a series of Covid-19 vaccine mandates for a broad swath of the American workforce. The White House framed these rules as a way of increasing vaccination rates and protecting workers from Covid-19, but this strategy has faced political and legal backlash. An appeals court temporarily halted a rule by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration that required all employers with 100 or more workers to have their staff take regular Covid-19 tests.

Even though vaccine mandates for private employers, healthcare facilities and federal contractors face legal challenges, a mandate for federal employees has remained in place. The Office of Management and Budget said last week that almost all of the federal government's workforce has taken a Covid-19 vaccine shot or applied for an exemption.
