Nelson is the top player in the state of California and the second-ranked quarterback in the class of 2023.
Nelson plays for Los Alamitos High School in Orange County, which is 25 miles south of Los Angeles. Staying close to home was made easier by Riley's departure from the Sooners.
It followed something of a purge for Oklahoma, as Kobie McKinzie and Brandon Inniss, both 5-star wide outs, decommit from the Sooners following the Riley news.

Raleek Brown, a 5-star running back, is currently an Oklahoma commit.
"That changes everything," he said this week. I had a good relationship with the Oklahoma coaches.
Nelson's switch in loyalties is huge for USC. Nelson has all the physical tools you could want in a next level signal-caller, according to Greg Biggins.
Nelson has an athletic body with plenty of room to grow, and is a very fluid athlete in everything he does, and no quarterback in the class has a higher ceiling right now than Nelson.
Nelson threw for 2,690 yards, 39 touchdown and nine interceptions as a junior in 2021. USC and Riley have pulled off a coup.
