The coronaviruses omicron variant, which was first discovered in South Africa and has been detected in more than a dozen countries, is being monitored by federal health officials. The federal government restricted air travel from several southern African countries. The White House framed its new country-specific travel rules as an early precautionary measure to buy time until more information about omicron becomes available.

The United States still hasn't recovered from a late- summer spike in coronaviruses cases, leading some experts and public officials to fear a winter surge. The country averaged over 80,000 new infections per day in the week ending Monday, less than half of the late August rate but still seven times higher than the June lull.

Travelers to the U.S. will need to be tested for coronaviruses amid omicron variant concerns.
