State prosecutors in Lbeck, a region in northern Germany, announced on Monday that they were investigating Winfried Stcker, 71, and three other doctors after police busted an unauthorized vaccine drive at an airport the wealthy doctor owns in Lbeck.

The police said by the time they arrived, 50 people appeared to have been jabbed with the vaccine, and 200 more people were in line.

The company's Medicines Act makes it illegal to operate a vaccine campaign without a license.
According to a translation by the Irish Times, Stcker told the German tabloid that he didn't want to pursue approval for his vaccine because it would take too long and cost millions.

The doctor's lawyer told the newspaper that Stcker was not at the airport during the vaccine drive and had not been charged.

Only 68.4% of the population in Germany are fully vaccined against coronaviruses, which is behind many other European Union countries. Germany and other German-speaking countries in Europe have lower rates of vaccination because of the popularity of alternative medicine and the nations' tradition of individual independence, according to the New York Times. On Monday, the country's next chancellor indicated he would support a national vaccine mandate. Two cases of the new Omicron variant of coronaviruses were detected in Germany over the weekend, which experts fear could be more infectious.

The key background.

Stcker made headlines this year when he claimed to have developed a coronaviruses vaccine with a 97 percent efficacy rate after testing himself and around 100 volunteers. The Irish Times reported Monday that the Paul Ehrlich Institute reached out to Stcker about testing his vaccine. He did not respond to the offer.
