Twitter’s new 37-year-old CEO went from Twitter engineer to CEO in just 10 years

Parag is the youngest CEO in the S&P 500. He was an engineer at the time.

After Jack Dorsey resigned on Monday, he was replaced by Jitendra Agrawal, who joined the company as a software engineer a decade ago. It took six years for him to reach the C-suite. The use of artificial intelligence and machine-learning technology at Twitter helped boost the company's audience growth.

Ten years ago, I joined a company with fewer than 1,000 employees. He wrote in an email to his employees on Monday that he now oversees a workforce of more than 5,500 employees. I have seen the ups and downs, the challenges and obstacles, the wins and the mistakes, and I have walked in your shoes.

The co- founder of the micro-messaging service called out the amazing background of the man, saying that he was an example of the ambition and potential that he had seen from the team. In his own email to employees, which was also posted on the social media platform, Dorsey wrote that paragliding started here as an engineer who cared deeply about our work and now he is our CEO.

In his email, Agrawal thanked Dorsey for taking the reins as CEO.

Agrawal thanked Dorsey for his mentorship and friendship. In his new role as CEO of the social media company, he praised his predecessor for leading the company through significant challenges, as they have faced a lot of criticism over issues such as misinformation on social media.

Before he joined the company, he was a researcher at a number of tech companies, including AT&T Labs, Microsoft and Yahoo. He received a degree in computer science and engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai.

He wasn't a household name before today, but that is changing. CNBC reported this afternoon that the following of Agrawal on the social networking site exploded after the announcement, jumping from around 24,000 followers earlier in the day to more than 140,000 at the time of publication.

The general partner at the venture capital firm is the wife of Agrawal.

The first person to hold the title ofDistinguished Software Engineer at the company was Agrawal. As an engineer, he worked on the company's advertising team. CNBC previously reported that Agrawal improved the platform's algorithms to make more relevant tweets appear in users' timelines.

His success as an engineer helped spur audience growth at the company and made him a rising star before he took over.

Bluesky, a team at Twitter researching open and decentralization technical standards for social media platforms that would allow content posted on one social platform to work on other social sites, has been worked on by both Agrawal and Dorsey.

The board of directors unanimously voted to make him the CEO on Monday and also appointed him to the board. In an email he sent to employees, Dorsey wrote that his trust in the CEO was "bone deep."

In the email, he said that he had been his choice for some time.
