Ingenious Devices Extract Power From the Ocean’s Tides

Swedish engineering firm Minesto has designed gliders that look like airborne drones, but are meant to capture power from underwater currents and use it to generate electricity down near the ocean floor.

The company is hoping to use a massive kite some 39 feet across to provide renewable power to the Faroe islands.

It is an interesting project. Even when there is no wind or sunshine, tidal power is an ideal source of clean energy.

There is Tidal Power.

The small island nation could use more power.

The new kites will have a 12-metre wingspan, and can each generate 1.2 megawatts of power, according to Martin Edlund. The kites will produce enough electricity to power half of the households in the Faroes.

The Faroe Islands use imported diesel to cover half of their energy needs, according to the BBC. The 17 inhabited islands have a goal of going net-zero emissions by the year 2030.

When supplies run low, there is no chance of bringing in power connections from another country. The net zero goals of the next decade are a crucial addition to the tidal motion.

Thekites are generating electricity as they move.
