Ranking the NHL's best team dogs

The Washington Capitals.

The opportunity to win the Stanley Cup in the next two decades has players across hockey begging to see their rivals go down. The NHL dog-eat-dog league is heating up, so it's time to rank the best NHL team dogs.

Several teams in the NHL have team dogs that are trained to become service dogs. These pups are seen around team facilities, posing for photos with fans and being doggone cute on social media.

None of these dogs are bad. The ranking is based on a system of factors, from cuteness to name to various puppy hijinks.

The rankings are on!

T-11. Harvey the Hound, the Flames, and the Avs.

These are not actual dogs, but they get a virtual belly scratch here. The first NHL mascot was Harvey, who was introduced by the team in 1983. Harvey is a cute name, but it's not the most hockey-focused name.

The mascot for St. Bernard is a lovable one, with a surprisingly detailed history. If he had an actual canine companion, he would move up in the rankings. Avs management, we don't think we're barking up the wrong tree with this suggestion.

9. The Vegas Golden Knights.

Knights win!

Final: BlueJacketsNHL 2 and GoldenKnights 3.

The Golden Knights have a therapy dog named Bark. He's a Jack Russell terrier and he's full of attitude. Bark's play on the legendary Knights netminder is top notch. Bark is bringing a lot to the table, and we're sure the Knights have their tails a-wagging to have Bark between the pipes.

8. The New York Islanders have Monte.

Our new puppy is ready for the game.

What are you doing tonight?

The New York Islanders will be on October 14, 2021.

The Isles' pup is almost painfully cute because it is the most pure, joyous, beautiful creatures on the planet. If you look at a picture or video of him for a while, your heart starts to hurt. The kind of hurt that the Isles fans have been feeling is not the same as a good hurt.

7. The Flex is from the Edmonton Oilers.

Flex is being raised by one of our employees with the goal of one day becoming a certified Assistance Dog!
>
September 3, 2021.

Flex, the 5-month-old Labrador, is showing promise as a member of the Oilers. Flex's name could be more ice-focused, but her good looks and work ethic have her well on her way up the charts.

6. Smash, Nashville.

It's National Dog Day.
>
The Lord Banner of Smashville is on August 26, 2021.

Smash's name evokes "Smashville," and in theory, predator should be intimidating and scary. Smash is not. He has a great smile and his tongue looks like it could fit in a cup of water. Smash made friends with a champion team dog. Friendly sports-dog-like conduct is what we like to see.

5. The Bolt, the Lightning.

I've been told that game-day outfit pictures are supposed to go on the internet.
>
October 13, 2021.

Bolt is one of the most squishy looking pups out of the bunch. He's the most recent Cup champion, so he's the top dog.

4. The St. Louis Blues have a person named Barclay.

A post was shared by Barclay.

According to the Blues' website, Barclay was the first ever Stanley Cup champion when he was with the Blues. The Blues legend, Barclay Plager, had a touching name for the young man.

3. Rick is from the Buffalo Sabres.

Meet Rick!

We are excited to announce our partnership with WNYHeroes and their program to make Rick a member of the Sabres family this season.

The Buffalo Sabres will be in action on November 9, 2021.

In the last few years, fans of the Sabres have had a hard time. This season has been particularly hard. From a surprisingly successful start that quickly faded, to the Jack Eichel trade, Sabres fans have been looking for something to focus on. Rick is a Newfoundland puppy named after Rick Jeanneret, the play-by-play man for the Sabres. There is a reason for fans to celebrate.

2. The Minnesota Wild.

I'm waiting for my friends to play.
>
Celly of themnwildpup is on November 2, 2021.

"Celly" is a nickname for a goal celebration and it's the strongest team dog hockey name. Celly has ears that stick straight up like a hockey stick, and his energy is unparalleled. Celly was caught making a steal at a Wild preseason game that was close to Kirill Kaprizov's smooth moves.

1. The Washington Capitals have a biscuit.

I would like to know if they had one with my name on it.
>
November 5, 2021.

Biscuit has it all: good looks, a killer hockey name, and a strong start when it comes to team dog antics. Biscuit has been giving out kisses, running on the ice, pumping iron, touring monuments, meeting his predecessor Captain and posting a storm. We can't wait to see what Biscuit does next, we think he has a bright future in this league.

The graduates received honorable mentions.

An NHL paw-er ranking wouldn't be complete without mentioning the team dogs who have since moved on to their service obligations.

The captain of the Washington hockey team.

The Arizona Coyotes are named Luna.

Finn is from San Jose.

The New York Rangers have a Ranger.

The New York Islanders have a female player.

Flambo, Montreal.

The rookies, the Senators.

The Minnesota Wild has a Breezer.

The Minnesota Wild.

There was an honorable mention in the non-dog category.

The Dallas Stars got a nod here for their adoption of a calf named Mike Moodano, a play on franchise icon Mike Modano.

Mike Moodano is a person.

That's all. That's the picture.

The Dallas Stars wrote on July 19, 2019:

The New Jersey Devils don't have a dog yet, but they have a good sense of humor about it.

We finally got a dog.
