This is the first year that Adobe has tracked a decline in spending on major shopping days. Adobe first began reporting on e- commerce in 2012 and it analyzes more than 1 trillion visits to retailers websites.
Retailers rang up $10.8 billion in sales on the web last Cyber Monday, as more people stayed home and avoided shopping in stores due to the ongoing coronaviruses epidemic. It was a record day for online purchases in the United States.
Adobe predicts that the holiday season will see record-breaking e-commerce activity as shoppers spread their dollars over more days.
Consumers in the US have spent $109.8 billion online, which is up 11.9% from a year ago, according to Adobe. It said consumers purchased more than $3 billion worth of goods on 22 of those days.
Digital sales will hit $207 billion, which would be a 10% increase.
On Thanksgiving day and Black Friday this year, shoppers spread out their spending so that they didn't spend as much on Cyber Week. Amazon has been promoting Black Friday style deals since October.
Adobe said that Black Friday online sales were $8.9 billion, down from the previous record of $9 billion spent on the Friday after Thanksgiving a year earlier. Consumers spent $5.1 billion on the internet on Thanksgiving, the same as last year.
Retailers gave consumers less of a reason to line up outside the mall in the early hours of the morning, as stores were a little less crowded on key shopping days this year. The data from Sensormatic Solutions shows that shopper traffic on Black Friday was up 47.5% compared with the previous year, but still down 28.3%. Walmart and Target kept their doors closed on Thanksgiving.
Taylor Schreiner, director at Adobe Digital Insights, said that consumers were not waiting for discounts on big shopping days like Cyber Monday and Black Friday.
