A man's pit bull barked as screams came from a burning building, alerting his owner to pull a woman and her son from a fire.
Chicago was the first dog to bark at Renaldo Vera. From his third-story window, he noticed someone outside was screaming. He heard a loud noise.
I shouted, "Is everything okay?" They yelled back, 'No.'
It was after 6 a.m. Vera wasn't sure what was going on but he knew something was wrong. He said that he jumped up and grabbed some clothes and just left.
Vera helped pull two people from a burning building, including a 7-year-old boy.
The woman who died in the fire was in her 60s, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The 7-year-old and his mother were critically injured.
I saw a man breaking windows when I got to the front of the house. I saw smoke and heard a little boy screaming. I helped pull the little boy out of the window as his grandfather went to see if there was another way in. Vera laid the boy down after taking him across the street.
Vera said that the older man used rocks and his feet to bust out the windows of the basement in the 5700 block of West 64th Street and that the two men pulled out the two people who had been trapped. He said that they both had cuts and burns.
Vera told the woman to go back to her boy as she helped her through the window.
Vera said that she tried to help her get out. I went back across the street. He wanted me to stay. He wanted me to be close to him. I held him until the ambulance arrived. He was a good boy. I told him a lot of positive things and that it was okay.
The members of the family he helped are not the only ones grateful for his quick action. The Chicago Fire Department gave a shout out to a neighbor who was near the fire. His dog woke him. He went to the fire building to help rescue a child and an adult. Thank you so much! His pit bull named Chicago is to thank.
Vera downplays the fact that people near Midway Airport have told him he is the area's angel.
I have been here a long time. The community is more of a loving one, we all look out for each other. He said that even though they don't know each other very well, they all help each other. They would do the same thing for me if you asked them.
He learned that from his father, who died three years ago.
My dad always looked out for everyone and that inspired me. Vera said she tried to be the same way. I always said that I would look after other people.
When his sister heard what he had done, she wasn't surprised.
Veronica Vera said that he has her father's heart.
Vera said he was glad he went outside to see if he could help because he would not have known it was a fire. When he first arrived, he couldn't tell if the house was burning or not, but as he walked closer to the house, the smoke began billowing out.
Vera said it was good that they got to them. There was a big burst of flames from the basement window. Vera said the little boy said it started in the basement.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
