Do You Need Daily Treatment to Repair Damaged Enamel?

The commercial is annoying to watch. She is a dentist, she wears a white coat, and she is expected to give good advice to viewers. If her information were accurate, I would find her voice annoying. It isn't. She is giving information that is not true.

Consumers might find her advice credible. They have come to expect improvements in dental care. They were told to use a toothpaste with fluoride instead of just cleaning their teeth. They were told to floss frequently. They were told to go to the dentist every 6 months instead of yearly. They might be surprised to hear that they need daily treatment to repair damaged enamel. They don't.

She says that we have to be able to repair our teeth on a daily basis. The Sensodyne Pro-Namel Repair Toothpaste gives you an opportunity to repair acid-weakened enamel because it has more vital minerals entering into it. Twice daily. It is amazing. She will always use it.

Two years ago, the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau recommended that a commercial be stopped because it made false claims.

Express claims.

The ProNamel toothpaste has a next level or innovative sodium fluoride technology that is beyond the typical remineralization effect marketed for decades.
ProNamel toothpaste is able to heal cracks deep within the tooth.
The cracks in teeth shown in the advertisement are caused by ProNamel toothpaste.

Implied claim.

The ProNamel toothpaste demonstration is false.

The deceptive ads continue despite the manufacturer saying it would comply with the recommendations.

The truth.

There are experimental treatments under development that may someday be recommended for that purpose, but tooth enamel will never grow back or be replaced once lost.

Exposure to acids from food and drinks can cause tooth decay. It will never grow back or be replaced if it is lost. Most toothpastes contain floride, a naturally occurring mineral. While fluoride can help to strengthen weak spots on existing enamel, it can't repair or strengthen tooth enamel that has been damaged or destroyed.

The dramatization in the video was not accurate.

There are established ways to maintain healthy teeth.

Good oral hygiene includes brushing, flossing, and rinsing.
Sugary foods and drinks should not be eaten.
In water and toothpaste.
Stop teeth grinding.
Acid reflux can be treated.
You should see your dentist frequently.

Don't believe everything you see on TV.

No, you don't need a special toothpaste to repair your tooth. TV commercials are designed to sell products, not give good science-based information.
