The Food and Drug Administration is expected to approve Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine booster shot for Americans ages 16 and 17 as public health experts track a new variant of the coronaviruses.

The First Minister of Scotland visited Glasgow on August 9, 2021, to promote the continued use of the COVID-19 vaccine. The photo was taken by Jeff J Mitchell.

Pfizer has yet to announce the request, and did not immediately respond to CNN or Forbes' requests for comment.

Less than two weeks after the FDA updated its emergency use authorizations for Pfizer and Moderna's Covid-19 vaccines to make all adults eligible for boosters six months after they take their initial shots, the report comes.

The vaccine was approved for children ages 5-11 last month.

Pfizer is the only vaccine that is available for people under the age of 18.

The United States has restricted travel from several countries in southern Africa due to concerns about the new coronaviruses, which was first detected by South African scientists last week. President Joe Biden said Monday that the omicron variant is a cause for concern, not a cause for panic, and that the United States would not resort to lockdowns in response to the variant. The severity of the variant is not yet known, though some experts are concerned it could be more transmissible than previous forms of the coronaviruses.

The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted against Pfizer's Covid-19 booster for all Americans ages 16 and older in September due to a lack of evidence that the third shot is safe and necessary for lower-risk patients. booster shots for seniors and high-risk adults were endorsed by the committee.
