According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, Brian Kelly is expected to be hired by LSU after 12 years at Notre Dame.

For the past two decades, Kelly has been viewed as one of the top coaches in college football. He made a name for himself during his time at Cincinnati after gradually improving Central Michigan.

Kelly led the school to double-digit wins in each of the three seasons he was the head coach. He led the school to a 12-0 regular season record in 2009.

Kelly helped the Fighting Irish return to prominence. He leaves as the school's winningest coach, having won more than 100 games in 12 seasons.

Notre Dame reached the College Football Playoff twice under Kelly, and also reached the Bowl Championship Series for the 2012 season.

After five consecutive seasons with double-digit wins at Notre Dame, Kelly would be taking over an LSU program that needs rebuilding.

In October, LSU athletic director Scott Woodward announced that Ed Orgeron wouldn't be back as head coach after the 2021 season. The team finished the season with a record of six wins and six losses.

The team had a 5-5 record in the 2020 season.

The past two years did not live up to expectations, but that did not stop the LSU coach from leading the team to a national championship. The 15-0 squad had one of the best offenses in history, scoring an NCAA-best 48.4 points per game.

It took just two years for the coach to be replaced after he was given the title.

The pressure on the next coach to deliver is enormous.

LSU has won national titles under each of the last three coaches, with Les Miles, Nick Saban and Ed Orgeron all finding glory. The new staff will be disappointed if anything less is achieved.

The hiring of Kelly could help the Tigers return to contention in the SEC West.

If the move becomes official, Kelly would be the latest big-name coach to take on a new job. Lincoln Riley left Oklahoma to take over at USC.
