Supreme Court asked to review overturned Bill Cosby sex crime conviction

Bill Cosby arrives at the Montgomery County Courthouse for sentencing in his sexual assault trial.

The Pennsylvania prosecutors asked the Supreme Court to review the lower court ruling that overturned the Bill Cosby conviction.

Cosby was sentenced to three years in prison after he was found guilty of drugging and sexually abusing a Temple University employee.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in June that a non-prosecution agreement with a prior prosecutor should have prevented him from being charged in the case. Cosby was released from prison on June 30.

The District Attorney's Office in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, filed a petition for the high court to consider whether the agreement between Cosby and the district attorney should be treated as a criminal case.

Kevin Steele said in a statement that the petition was the right thing to do because of the precedent set in the case.

This decision will have far-reaching negative consequences beyond Montgomery County and Pennsylvania. Steele said that the U.S. Supreme Court can correct what they think is a grievous wrong.
