Pharma Company to Start Human Trials of HIV Cure Next Year

The company is ready to start human trials of its potential cure for HIV next year, according to the report.

The head of research and development at Glaxo told investors that she hopes the company will come up with a cure by the year 2030.

The idea of HIV treatment giving those who have been exposed a chance to fully heal is an extraordinary one.

Two weeks ago, the UK health authorities recommended an HIV treatment drug called vocabria, developed by Glaxosmithkline. The injection only needs to be administered once every two months.

The drug kept the number of virus particles in the blood low enough to not be detected or transmitted.

Over the last forty years or so, tens of millions of people have died from the HIV/AIDS epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 37.7 million people were still living with the virus at the end of last year.

Permanent relief could be within reach with a cure on the horizon.
