PSG's Lionel Messi beats out Bayern's Robert Lewandowski to win record-seventh Ballon d'Or

Lionel Messi has more Ballon d'Or awards than any other player.

Lionel Messi was awarded the prestigious Ballon d'Or for a record-extending seventh time in a ceremony in Paris on Monday.

Messi left Barcelona in August of 2020 after 21 years at the club, and joined Paris Saint-Germain a few months later.

He now has two more Ballon d'Or awards than Manchester United's CRRonald, who has five.

Robert Lewandowski was the favourite for last year's prize before it was canceled due to the outbreak of the coronaviruses, but he was beaten by Lionel Messi for the award.

The European Golden Shoe winner broke the single-season goal record in the Bundesliga in May, and was nominated for the award again this year.

Although he didn't win the night's biggest prize, Robert Lewandowski was named the top scorer at the ceremony and finished second to Messi.

Jorginho was tipped for the award after helping Italy win the Euro 2020 title, and also winning the European Championship with his club side.

The nominees for the award were Kylian Mbappe, Mohamed Salah, Karim Benzema, and Neymar.

Donnarumma was named the Goalkeeper of the Year after being a finalist for the Ballon d'Or.

The men's and women's teams from the same club were named the Team of the Year, with the managers Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes accepting the award remotely due to the restrictions on COVID-19.

The Ballon d'Or is awarded by France Football every year, and Messi won for the first time in 2020.

Pedri was Europe's best young player, just a week after he won the Golden Boy award.
