Sources familiar with the situation told Jeff Passan that the Mets are close to a three-year, $130 million deal with ace pitcher Max Scherzer.

There are still details to be worked out, and the numbers could change.

The average salary of $43.33 million would be a new record, beating the $36 million New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is averaging in a $324 million nine-year contract.

The Mets have gone on a spending spree over the weekend, signing center fielder Starling Marte, infielder Eduardo Escobar and outfielder Mark Canha to deals worth a combined $124.5 million.

Steve Cohen, the new owner of the club, didn't want to deny one of the best pitchers available in Scherzer after seeing Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz sign with other clubs.

Jacob deGrom, who didn't pitch after July 7 last season because of concerns with his elbow, will join the Mets' rotation.

In the 2010s, he was one of the best pitchers in the game, along with Verlander and Kershaw.

During his age 36 season in the year 2021, Max Scherzer went 15-4 with a 2.46 earned run average in 179 13 starts for the Washington Nationals and the Los Angeles Dodgers, striking out 236 batters and walking only 36. He finished third in the National League Cy Young Award voting, his eighth time in the last nine years that he has finished within the top five.

Even though the 2020 season was shortened to 60 games because of the coronaviruses epidemic, the stretch in which Scherzer has posted a 2.82 ERA while averaging 15 wins and 192 strikeouts per season has lasted for five years. He leads all pitchers with a FanGraphs win rate of 51.2.

Three years later, the Arizona Diamondbacks flipped the 11th-overall pick in the 2006 draft to the Detroit Tigers in a three-team trade that also saw Ian Kennedy and other players switch teams.

In Detroit, Verlander and Scherzer formed a devastating duo that often fell just short of a championship. He joined the Nationals on a seven-year, $210 million free-agent deal in January of 2015 and somehow outperformed his contract over the course of six-plus seasons, a highly impressive run that culminated in the World Series championship.

In July of 2020 the Dodgers acquired middle infielder Trea Turner in exchange for catcher Keibert Ruiz and pitcher Josiah Gray. The NL Division Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Washington Nationals was the only game in which the right-handed pitcher didn't have a great outing.

The NL Championship Series between the Atlanta Braves and the NL's reigning Cy Young Award winner, Max Scherzer, began with him struggling through the first two games, and later saying his arm was still tired from his relief appearance. He was originally scheduled to start again in Game 6 but was pushed back for Game 7 due to sore muscles, and then the Dodgers were eliminated in Game 6.

In 14 major league seasons, the pitcher is 190-97 with a 3.16 earned run average. He has 3,020 strikeouts, which is 18th on the all-time list.
