U.K. Vaccination Committee Advises Expanding Booster Eligibility To All Adults

The United Kingdom's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) announced a number of new measures Monday, including expanding Covid vaccine booster shot eligibility to all adults and offering second doses to children aged 12 to 15.

The six month wait for those over 40 who were already eligible will be shortened to three months for adults 18 to 39.

Priority will be given to older and high-risk adults when it comes to Boosters.

The Pfizer vaccine will be offered to children between the ages of 12 and 15 at least 12 weeks after their first dose, though the interval may be reduced to eight weeks.

Adults from 40 to 49 have been eligible for a booster since September. 53 million people in the UK will be eligible, but only 17 million have gotten a third jab. There are no vaccines currently approved for children under the age of 11.

There have been 11 cases of omicron confirmed in the UK. The booster plan was extended to speed up the deployment of Covid-19 vaccines before the peak of any impending Omicron wave, according to the JCVI. There is no data to suggest that omicron cases are associated with a change in the pattern of susceptibility to serious Covid.
