It probably is if it sounds too good to be true. Nuclear fusion power, which holds the promise of clean and virtually unlimited electricity, could be just around the corner, according to experts around the globe. According to the Financial Times, new advances may finally tip the scale after six decades of unfulfilled promises.
Andrew Holland told the publication that fusion is coming faster than expected.
Green and clean.
There are many benefits to nuclear fusion. It would create little waste and would never cause an accident like Chernobyl. There is a plan to dump radioactive water into Cape Cod Bay.
fusion would be more effective than being cleaner. One glass of fuel could power a home for 800 years and have the energy potential of one million gallons of oil, according to the FT. Imagine holding 800 years of electricity in one hand.
The tech is difficult to fix. A fusion reactor that produces more power than it consumes has yet to be built.
One of many.
Investment money is flowing into the tech. According to the FT, Silicon Valley investor Sam Altman recently invested $375 million into Helion, a US-based fusion startup.
If nuclear fusion becomes a reality, it could play a significant role in saving the planet. Climate change, green and renewable energy, less waste are all in the nuclear fusion promise.
Let's hope investors like Altman stick it out.
Our Climate is Changing Rapidly. It is time to talk about engineering.
