Abloh had a rare form of cancer and died on Sunday.
Abloh was considered to be one of the pioneers of high-end street fashion, or what he called the "post-streetwear movement," with roots in the classic streetwear that originated in hip-hop and skating culture. Abloh's influence was everywhere when the lines between luxury and streetwear were torn down.

Business Insider previously reported that Abloh was named artistic director for Louis Vuitton. He was the first black American to lead a French fashion house.
Abloh's own line, Off-White, established a reputation. Abloh collaborated with partners such as Nike and Ikea.

The rise of luxury streetwear has been led by Abloh, who is seen as being the trend's pioneer.
Off-White is one of the top luxury brands in the world. Abloh and the brand are known for collaborating with a number of companies, including furniture store Ikea, water company Evian, luggage brand Rimowa, and even McDonald's.
Abloh has over 5 million followers on the photo-sharing site and is good friends with his partner, West. His designs have been seen on many people.

Abloh wrote, "I'm crazy inspired by the Miami community." For kids in the streets that need bail funds for George Floyd protests. You can have it if it heals your pain.

He donated $50 to a bail fund. He made a donation after receiving backlash for attacking looters who broke into his friend's store. He commented on the looting on the social media site.

Sean puts in a lot of sweat and tears for our culture. I am disgusted by this and I hope you are not, because the product staring at you in your home/apartment right now is a reminder of a person I hope you aren't. We are apart of a culture. Is this what you want? Please don't look at him in the future, hang your head in shame.

Abloh's small donation sparked more backlash, as many people pointed out that $50 isn't enough to buy a pair of socks from his brand Off White.

The people were arrested for protesting police brutality against Abloh. He was accused of not helping out the black community that propelled him to fame.

The conversation went from high-fashion to serious after Virgil responded to Friedman, saying that he would like to give a lecture on the article because "riffing online is far too low hanging fruit for such an easy and massive 'case and point'."

Freidman said, "Come do it at the Times Center."

Abloh sent Friedman an image from Joseph Beuys' 1974 art piece "I Like America and America Likes Me" in which the artist spent 8 hours with a coyote as a commentary on American society in the 1970s. The coyote was America's spirit animal and the piece commented on a nation divided along multiple lines, including the Vietnam War and relations between the majority and minority populations.

Friedman asked if the coyote was in the picture. Are you Beuys? Are these questions relevant? Abloh didn't directly answer those questions.

According to Vogue's Steff Yotka, there is a rumor that Abloh missed his final critique to meet with John Monopoly, who was then-manager of Westlife.
He told The Cut that he didn't know he could be a full-time artist. He said that he felt that a random black kid from the suburbs of Chicago shouldn't be doing that.

In his senior year, he took his first art history class and learned about the Renaissance and Italian painter Caravaggio. He said that it flipped his head back. I had spent a lot of time thinking.

Business Insider previously reported that many luxury houses followed in the footsteps of the streetwear foundation that Virgil helped build.

The "post-streetwear movement" saw Dior collaborating with Nike to make limited-edition Air Jordans, Louis Vuitton launching a collaboration with Supreme, and Gucci working with a legendary Harlem designer.

Friedman made a pretty compelling case that Abloh could be seen as the "millennial" Karl Lagerfeld. She wrote that both made their marks by embracing irony.

She wrote that he has made a community that can seem like a cult of personality around himself. He speaks in rolling sentences and is a pleasure to listen to, especially in a world where the most celebrated names often seem to be tying themselves up in knots at the prospect of answering a question.
Mr. Abloh and Mr. Lagerfeld were criticized for doing too much. Mr. Abloh has shown himself to be the best designer when he builds atop a foundation. His Vuitton is more interesting than his Off-White, which often seems like a pallid copy of other people's ideas.

"This is one of the most subtle and apt analyses fromVVFriedman on what is wrong in fashion today, how modern designers care less about construction and quality, instead focusing on the superficial, like logos or splash to make it look good," said Senza Tempo.

Pam Boy said that the article was a good one. I might not agree with it, but Ms Friedman made me do it.

Others felt that Abloh and Lagerfeld are not necessarily the same.
"Y'all need to stop trying to push this agenda because he isn't." Even though he is mass produced and accessible, it does not compare to the craftsmanship. One said it was rather insulting.

There's no comparison! Karl's ability to constantly change while staying true to the brands he headed is unparalleled by anyone alive or dead, commented one.
