US, UK, and Japanese aircraft carriers are training together in the Pacific. Here's how their 'big decks' stack up

The true cost of an aircraft carrier is not known.

The US has never built an aircraft carrier like the Ford. The total cost is more than 30% higher than initial estimates. More costs are expected. The Navy accepted the Ford without some of its newest technologies operating, and the ship won't be ready for battle until 2022.

Their drills are part of an effort to develop interoperability.

The American, British, and Japanese navy have been busy for the last two months.

The US Navy's Ronald Reagan and Carl Vinson, the UK's Queen Elizabeth, and Japan's Ise were part of a massive exercise that took place in the Western Pacific.

A few weeks later, the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, the helicopter carrier Queen Elizabeth, and the helicopter carrier JS Kaga were all in the eastern Indian Ocean.

In early November, the amphibious assault ship, the America, and the aircraft carrier, the Carl Vinson, conducted exercises in the South China Sea.

The drills show a concerted effort to develop interoperability between naval vessels and is likely a demonstration to China as it continues to increase its naval power.

The drills are done.

In October of 2021, the US Navy's Ronald Reagan, the British ship Queen Elizabeth, and the Japanese ship Ise will sail together in the Philippine Sea.

The drills are only part of a long deployment.

The US Navy's 7th Fleet has the only forward-deployed carrier in the US. Reagan has been in the region since it returned from Afghanistan. The 7th Fleet's area of operations was the location of the Carl Vinson strike group.

The carrier strike group led by Queen Elizabeth entered the Pacific in July. Japan's deployment in the Pacific began on August 20.

The drill with all four carriers was the largest with 17 ships and 15,000 personnel from the US, UK, Japanese, Dutch, Canadian, and New Zealand.

The drills took place in different places at different times but focused on a few important capabilities: joint planning, communications, air warfare, live-fire gunnery, anti-submarine warfare, and cross-deck flight operations, which are easier now that the US Navy, Marine Corps and the

The US Navy has 10 Nimitz-class carriers in service.

They are 1,092 feet long and displace 97,000 tons. They are powered by two nuclear reactors and can sail at over 30 knots, but only with the endurance of their crew. Their standard complement is between 3000 and 3,200 sailors and 1,500 men in the air wing.

Their huge size allows them to carry over 60 aircraft, usually a combination of F/A-18E or F/A-18F Super Hornet fighters, E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning and control aircraft, and the Growler electronic-warfare aircraft. The carriers can also carry aircraft. Future air wings may include drones.

The CATOBAR system is used for air operations. The Gerald R. Ford class has a CATOBAR system, but they will be powered by electromagnets.

The Royal Navy got a renewed carrier capability with the commission of the ships Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales.

The carriers are long and large. They sail as fast as 25 knots and have a range of 10,000 miles.

The Queen Elizabeth-class carriers have a number of improvements over previous British carriers, including their unique dual-island configuration, which handles ship navigation and flight operations from the forward island.

Each carrier has a minimum crew of 679 sailors, but they have 1,600 berths. The ideal composition for the air wing would be 36 F-35Bs and at least four helicopters, a combination of either the Mk2s or the Wildcats.

The British F-35B fleet is limited because of the crash of one of the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.

The size of the air wings the carriers can embark on is restricted by that. The US Marine Corps has 10 of the 18 F-35Bs aboard Queen Elizabeth.

Japan's not-quite-carriers.

The Japanese Izumo-class destroyer is in the Philippine Sea.

The largest ships in Japan's navy are the two Izumo-class helicopter carriers.

Izumo and Kaga were commissioned in 2015, and in 2017, respectively.

The Izumos are powered by four gas-turbine engines and can sail at 30 knots. They have an air wing of seven Seahawk anti-submarine-warfare helicopters and seven MCH101 helicopters, which conduct minesweeping and transport missions.

The hygas is powered by four gas-turbine engines and can reach speeds over 30 knots. Their air wings are usually made up of three SH60K Seahawks and one MCH101. They have 16 vertical launch missile cells, two Phalanx close-in weapon systems, and two triple torpedo tubes.

The Japanese Izumo-class helicopter destroyer was in formation with the US Navy's flagship in the South China Sea.

Japan's constitution forbids offensive weaponry, so the aircraft-carrying ships focus on anti-submarine warfare.

The Japanese government decided to convert its two Izumo-class ships into aircraft carriers and buy 42 F-35Bs.

Izumo's conversion began in 2020 and ended in July. The first fixed-wing aircraft to operate from a Japanese carrier in 75 years were the two US Marine Corps F-35Bs that landed on Izumo's deck. The conversion of Kaga is expected to begin next year.

Japan hopes to get 18 F-35Bs in the early to mid-twenties. They will be flown by Japan's air force and only go to the Izumos for certain missions.
